These strings went on a Telecaster with a humbucker at the bridge and a
single coil at the neck. Just before this i had strung up my Stratocaster with Dean Markley 2504.
In retrospect i should've put the 2504s on the Tele and these strings on
the Strat. As usual my 90's VHT was sitting there ready
to go so i ran through that first. Started off with a bunch of
chicken-pickin' licks with the distortion cranked, which... it's not the
most tasteful use of a Telecaster! The guitar and amp sounded fine
in spite of my playing.
Later on i actually did some recording with this guitar for somebody's
demo using the V-Amp.

I was switch-hitting with this guitar at practice the next couple of
weeks and in truth i noticed no difference between these strings and the
Ernie Ball 2221s i had been using before
this. Same good tone, same good feel. That rig was: V-Amp >
solid-state power amp > 2x10 open back cabinet.
At one point i had this guitar going through the Vox and a 4x12
cabinet - i thought that was a pretty good setup. Simple, fairly
clean, and LOUD. I would've liked to hear this with the band, but
there was no way i was gonna haul/setup that head and cabinet just
for 2 or 3 tunes where i'm completely gain-free!
Really though, i'm positive the sound would've been the same with these
strings, the 2221s, or D'Addario EXL110s.
I'll definitely buy these strings again if they're priced
anywhere near the $3.31 i found them listed for today at
MusiciansFriend.com: but if they're priced anywhere near the $4.99 i
also see them listed today at the Guitar Center... no way! |
